Skrillex launches Contra in Berlin

Skrillex is debuting a new creative platform called Contra, and its first iteration is already shaping up to be one of the more ambitious electronic events of the year. According to Billboard, the Skrillex-led project will kick off with a two-day event at Kraftwerk Berlin on May 30 and 31, featuring a lineup of more than 70 electronic and experimental artists.

Kraftwerk Berlin is an exhibition and cultural space housed inside a former power station in the German capital, making it a fitting venue for a project that aims to blur the boundaries between sound, light, and spatial experience.

The lineup

Skrillex himself performs, joined by a wide cast of collaborators and artists. Confirmed names include Bladee, Knock2, Ahadadream, Blawan, Ecco2k, Tohji x Mechatok, BNYX, and Nai Barghouti featuring Thys and Peter Somos, among many others.

Fans also noticed a comment from frequent Skrillex collaborator Boys Noize on the event's Instagram page, writing "I wonder who ??? is," strongly hinting at an unannounced appearance. He does not appear on the official lineup poster.

Design and atmosphere

The environmental design for Contra is being handled by Paris-based studio Matiere Noire, described in the press release as reshaping "the monumental scale of Kraftwerk into intimate atmospheres, while dissolving distinctions between light and sound." The studio has previously worked on scenography for brands including Courrèges, MM6, Cartier, and Chanel.

What comes next

Contra is described as an ongoing project that will take various forms beyond this first Berlin event. On the broader touring front, Skrillex also has upcoming festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Dekmantel, Boomtown, Sziget, Austin City Limits, and Head Trip, a new Goldenvoice concept taking place on the Coachella grounds in October. That festival also features Calvin Harris, Swedish House Mafia, Peggy Gou, Four Tet, Dom Dolla, and others.
