Phoebe Bridgers debuts new songs at secret MSG show
Phoebe Bridgers made her most significant return to the stage in years on June 4 with a top-secret show at Madison Square Garden, debuting eight unreleased songs from her widely rumored third solo album. According to Billboard, who was granted rare access to the event, Bridgers performed on a stripped-down stage furnished with a couch, lava lamps, and a vintage TV, accompanied only by Christian Lee Hutson on guitar and Nick White on keyboards.
No phones, no pens, no leaks
Attending the show came with conditions. Fans were required to lock their phones in special pouches and surrender any writing utensils at the door, measures designed to keep unreleased material off the internet. Media had been excluded from her previous acoustic pop-up shows in southern and midwestern America in the weeks prior, making the MSG date a notable exception, though outlets agreed not to publish new song titles or lyrics.
The new material, still untitled publicly, circled themes of love's deterioration, mortality, going into hiding, and the desire for self-improvement. Bridgers also addressed her late father directly in at least one song, expanding on a complicated relationship she has only hinted at before.
Lottery tickets, one dollar, and a political statement
Fans secured seats through a lottery system, and those selected were required to donate a minimum of $1 to the Immigration Bond Freedom Fund, which assists people detained and deported under the Trump administration. Bridgers did not hold back on where she stands.
"I hate those ICE idiots," she told the crowd, also comparing immigration enforcement officers to "cops squared."
Where she stands now
The show comes after a period of significant growth for Phoebe Bridgers as an artist. Her role in Boygenius brought critical acclaim through The Album, she opened for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, and she won more awards than any other nominee at the 2024 Grammys. Her last solo record, Punisher, was released more than three years before this run of shows.
The indie rock community has been waiting a long time. If the MSG reaction is any measure, the comeback has already started.
