Universal Music New Zealand launches nextWAV. artist development program for emerging Kiwi talent
Universal Music New Zealand's nextWAV. offers a 12-month mentorship program for aspiring artists aged 16 to 18, with applications open until July 19, 2026.
Universal Music New Zealand bets on the next generation
Universal Music New Zealand has launched nextWAV., a 12-month artist development program aimed at emerging Kiwi talent aged 16 to 18. According to Billboard, the program went live on June 4, 2026, and is described as an industry first in the New Zealand market. Applications close July 19, 2026.
What the program offers
nextWAV. takes a hands-on approach. Participants will receive one-on-one guidance from industry professionals covering songwriting, production, branding, live performance and digital strategy, alongside practical time in studio environments and live performance settings. The goal, as co-managing director Matt Kidd put it, is "building confidence, capability and connection" while mapping a path toward sustainable careers both domestically and on the global stage.
Co-managing director Myra Hemara, who helped design the program alongside Kidd, framed it as a response to the structural challenges facing New Zealand artists: distance from major markets, the cost of international touring, and the difficulty of breaking through on streaming platforms dominated by established names on both sides of the Atlantic.
A broad coalition of partners
The program's principal funding partners are NZ On Air and Creative New Zealand. Additional supporters include APRA AMCOS, Big Fan, Live Nation New Zealand, The Tuning Fork, New Zealand Music Commission, Launchpad and Play It Strange.
Sean Warner, president of Universal Music Australia and New Zealand, pointed to the label's existing New Zealand roster as evidence of the country's track record. That roster includes Lorde, SIX60, Marlon Williams and Gin Wigmore. New Zealand has also produced globally recognized acts such as Benee, Broods, Ladyhawke and Split Enz, who reunited in 2026 for their first tour in almost 20 years.
How to apply
Applicants must be permanent residents or citizens of New Zealand, aged 16 to 18, and able to participate on the program's scheduled dates. Parental or guardian consent is required. Full details and the application form are available at nextwav.co.nz. If you cover the emerging artists scene in the Pacific, this one is worth watching.
