Snubs and surprises at the 2026 American Music Awards in Las Vegas
Taylor Swift left empty-handed, KATSEYE won three awards, and Morgan Wallen missed out on favorite country album once again at the 2026 AMAs.

2026 American Music Awards: the night nobody saw coming
The 2026 American Music Awards delivered one of its most unpredictable nights in recent memory. According to Billboard, the ceremony took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday, May 25, hosted by Queen Latifah and broadcast on CBS with a simulcast on Paramount+. If you were expecting a routine coronation, the night had other plans.
Taylor Swift walks away with nothing
Perhaps the defining storyline of the evening was what did not happen. Taylor Swift, one of the most decorated artists in AMA history, did not win a single award. No category, no consolation prize. It is the kind of result that will fuel conversation long after the confetti is swept off the stage at the MGM Grand.
New names, real trophies
The artists who filled that vacuum were, by mainstream standards, relative newcomers. KATSEYE, HUNTR/X, and Sombr each walked away with three awards, a remarkable haul for acts that were little-known just a year or two ago. Whether this signals a genuine shift in how AMA voters are engaging with emerging artists, or simply a fragmented vote splitting the spoils, is worth watching going forward.
Morgan Wallen, still waiting
On the country side, Morgan Wallen was passed over again for favorite country album, a category he has yet to win. The pattern is becoming one of the more curious running storylines in awards-show politics.
A show with deep roots
The ceremony leaned into its own history, featuring clips from past AMA editions across the broadcast. That context matters: as Billboard notes, the first AMAs were presented in February 1974, with Richard Nixon still in the White House. Over fifty years later, the show now hands out awards across categories including hip-hop, Latin, rock/alternative, dance/electronic, K-Pop, Afrobeats, and Americana/folk, a far wider canvas than the original three genres of pop/rock, soul/R&B, and country.
The 2026 AMA winners full list is available on Billboard.
