How 'Produce 101 Japan Shinsekai' is sending JO1, INI and ZEROBASEONE streams through the roof
The survival show's group and position battle rounds are pushing massive streaming spikes for tracks by JO1, INI, ZEROBASEONE, and even Imagine Dragons.
A survival show with a real streaming effect
Produce 101 Japan Shinsekai, the fourth season of the franchise that previously launched JO1, INI, and ME:I, is proving that what happens on screen translates directly into numbers on streaming platforms. According to Billboard, the show is set to culminate in the debut of a 12-person global boy band, chosen by both Japanese viewers and, for the first time, global voters as well.
Group Battle: JO1, Wanna One, and Stray Kids spike
Episodes 4 and 5, which aired on April 9 and April 16 respectively, featured a GROUP BATTLE format where 101 trainees competed in 16 groups, each assigned one of eight songs. The results on streaming platforms were striking.
JO1's "Love seeker" rose by 197% in Japan and by the same figure across Asia during the week the episode aired. Billboard notes that JO1's dome tour JO1DER SHOW 2026 'EIEN', which included dates at Tokyo Dome on April 8 and 9 and Kyocera Dome Osaka on April 22 and 23, likely contributed as well.
Wanna One's "Energetic" posted even sharper gains: 468% in Japan and 219% across Asia. A fan meeting in Seoul on April 6 marked the group's first such event in seven years, and the official reformation is considered another driver of those numbers.
Stray Kids' "CASE 143" also climbed, up 145% in Japan and 124% across Asia.
Position Battle: INI, ZEROBASEONE, and Imagine Dragons follow suit
Episodes 6 and 7, which aired on April 30 and May 7, introduced a POSITION BATTLE: OPEN ROUND format focused on self-production abilities. The streaming impact was just as clear.
- Imagine Dragons' "Natural" jumped 199% in Japan and 104% across Asia.
- INI's "DOMINANCE" rose 167% in Japan and 166% across Asia.
- ZEROBASEONE's "Doctor! Doctor!" climbed 218% in Japan and 173% across Asia.
INI and ZEROBASEONE were both headliners at KCON JAPAN 2026, held May 8 to 10 at Makuhari Messe, a detail Billboard flags as another likely factor behind the streaming surge.
The human moments that move audiences
Beyond the format, individual storylines appear to be deepening the connection between viewers and the music. Dance trainer Rino Nakasone's advice to trainee YURA about Imagine Dragons' "Natural", "The song is all about not bowing under pressure," resonated with viewers and drew wider attention to the track. Similarly, surprise appearances by INI members during the "DOMINANCE" round and the teamwork recovery arc surrounding "Doctor! Doctor!" gave each song a narrative weight that kept audiences returning to the audio long after the episodes ended.
The pattern here is consistent: the show is functioning not just as a talent contest but as a playlist engine, reviving catalog tracks and boosting newer releases in equal measure.
