FISHER, the Grammy-nominated Australian DJ and producer, has joined the Australian and New Zealand voice cast of Toy Story 5. According to Billboard, he will voice a character named Garden Gnome, described as a member of a community of forgotten toys living in an abandoned backyard shed. The film opens in Australia and New Zealand on June 18.
Who is Garden Gnome?
Disney describes the character as "fiercely protective of teatime and his kid," which fits neatly into the franchise's tradition of giving supporting figures very specific, very earnest personality traits. FISHER said in a statement that Toy Story is a franchise his family has loved for years and that he cannot wait to watch the film with his kids.
The role is a rare step outside music for FISHER, whose ascent over the past decade has taken him from Gold Coast club nights to headlining slots in Ibiza, Las Vegas, and at major festivals including Coachella. His track "Losing It" earned him a Grammy nomination and topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart.
The bigger picture
Toy Story 5 reunites much of the franchise's core cast, with Tom Hanks returning as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. New additions include Greta Lee, whose character Lilypad is a smart tablet device that introduces a technology-focused conflict into the story.
The film is directed by Andrew Stanton, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Finding Nemo and WALL-E, with a score from longtime franchise composer Randy Newman. FISHER's casting is region-specific to Australia and New Zealand, which gives the local rollout a marquee name that will resonate with fans of the electronic music scene that has been exporting talent globally for years.
