The ex-Poison singer becomes the sixth act to withdraw from the 16-day festival on the National Mall, citing safety threats and a shift in the event's tone.
Bret Michaels exits Great American State Fair
Bret Michaels has pulled out of the Great American State Fair, making him the sixth act to exit the Great American State Fair lineup since the music program was announced on May 27 by Freedom 250. The event is a 16-day free festival running June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., organized to mark America's 250th anniversary.
According to Billboard, Michaels explained his decision in a lengthy social post, pointing to safety concerns and a change in the event's character. "What was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of," he wrote, also noting "threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable" directed at his fans, band, crew, and family.
"This isn't about politics," Michaels added. "It's about staying true to what I've always believed in."
Who else has walked
Michaels joins Morris Day and The Time, Young MC, Milli Vanilli, and Martina McBride in stepping away from the bill. Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory have publicly reaffirmed their participation. Flo Rida had not commented at the time of publication.
Poison's legacy on the charts
As the frontman of Poison, Michaels placed 12 titles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 single "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" in 1988, which held the top spot for three weeks. Poison also earned 12 entries on the Billboard 200, with three landing in the top 10. As a solo artist, Michaels has added three more Billboard 200 entries to that tally.
Poison is currently marking 40 years since the release of its 1986 debut studio album, Look What the Cat Dragged In. Michaels confirmed that his Live and Amplified Tour 2026 will not be affected by the decision.
